Impact of Vision Loss

The global cost of vision loss for the 733 million people worldwide living with low vision and blindness in 2010 was estimated at nearly $3 trillion dollars ($2,954 billion USD).  [1

While the financial cost of vision loss is staggering, the emotional impact of vision loss is immeasurable.  According to VISION 2020, approximately 90% of visually-impaired children in low-income countries are deprived of schooling and few are able to realize their full potential. [2]

Financial costs of vision loss and blindness include the burden of care, rehabilitation, tax revenue, and lost productivity.   The overall financial costs are expected to increase in the years to come, overburdening healthcare systems worldwide.
